RARE BLEND (article first published : 2005-08-4)

The Rare Blend chorus are a mixed group of singers based in the Pinetown area who sing in the Barbershop style, acappella and in four part harmony.

Singers both old and young are attracted to the group, Whether you are an individual soloist or just an average singer, Rare Blend believe that they can offer lots of fun and enjoyment in the group. Now in existence for 12 years, it is the group’s intention to increase the choir from its current 18 member status to about 30 members.

“We are indeed fortunate to have a most talented young musical director, Martin Juby, not only is he talented in the classical music sense, but he also has a particular love for Barbershop music with its special chords and harmonies,” says spokesperson Maureen Bald. “He has attended Barbershop College in America to further this knowledge.

“Both male and female members are welcome as we sing collectively together, and on occasions we split the choir into 4 male or a 4 female groups for specific items. We perform “sing outs” on a regular basis and the positive feedback we receive is always encouraging. However, it all comes back to singing for fun and enjoyment and it is with this in mind combined with a happy and contended group of singers that makes it all worthwhile.”

RareBlend challenges those who may have just stopped singing for the usual reasons (no time, not good enough, too old, etc) to at least meet them on a practice evening, if only just to listen. “If you enjoy what you hear, why not come and join us?” says Maureen.

Details of venue, times etc can be obtained from Graham Harries on 084 502 2356, Olga Brooks on 031 701 1943 or Maureen Bald on 031 764 3868 or 083 421 5700.
