VOICES FROM THE HEART (article first published : 2005-07-19)

Supported by the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism: Ethekwini Cluster, a special gala concert will be held over two evenings to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the inception of the Durban Divas and to showcase new vocal talent in KwaZulu Natal.

In celebrating five years of the success story, Durban Divas will introduce the “D”ynamic Thembi Mazibuko, “D”elicious Dudu Ndlovu and “D”ivine Jabu Magagula alongside Pinkie Mtshali. In addition, there will be guest appearances by past members of Durban Divas.

Highlighting their great successes will inspire and infuse budding artists with renewed hope to realize their dreams. The four-member group will be accompanied by a three piece Afro-jazz band and a host who will provide catalysts in the form of facts and anecdotes helping the audience reminisce.

Durban Divas was formed in July 2000 with their first performance at the Royal Hotel’s Backstage Supper Theatre with special performances for the International Anti-Racists Conference that was hosted in Durban. Their repertoire now includes songs from local and international singers from musicals, commercial numbers, Afro-Jazz ballads, Gospel, Traditional, Disco, Pop- Rock, and well-known township tunes.

The founders and original members of the Durban Divas are Pinkie Mtshali (an all rounder Durban born singer who is the director, designs costumes and manages the Durban Divas, her passion lies on the success story of the Durban Divas and the show is a dream come true for her), Smiley Kunene (a versatile singer who in mid 2004 got married and relocated to Germany) and Mpume Mthombeni an actress/comedian who has featured in the HIV puppet show Amagama Amathathu as well as environmental comedy The Green Hat and many productions by the Actors Co-Operative.

Durban Divas have performed as guest singers in numerous festivals, corporate products launches, functions, weddings, fashion shows, beauty contents and conferences as well as in HIV/AIDS & CANSA Benefit concerts with numerous local bands like Iva Band, Youth Wind Orchestra and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

Voices From The Heart will have performances at Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Wharf on July 25 and 26 at 19h00. Bookings through Thandeka or Janice on 031 305 6889.
