340ML AT KRAKATOA (article first published : 2005-07-19)

The highly popular band 340ml will perform at Krakatoa at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom on July 21 and 22.

ďWhile their name refers to the standard volume of a can of beer, their music ó a heady combination of reggae, dub, funk, world grooves, rock and jazz ó is more like an elaborate musical cocktail,Ē says SA journalist, Daniel Freidman of their style.

The four-member group, currently based in Johannesburg but with its roots firmly planted in Mozambique, released the album Moving in 2003 which earned them critical praise and opening doors to a seriously busy gigging schedule.

The band comprises Paulo Jorge Chibanga (drums), Rui Soeiro (bass), Tiago Correia Paulo (guitar) and Pedro da Silva Pinto (vocals, sampler) who are all skilled musicians with an eclectic approach to playing that makes for compelling listening. Itís not for nothing that Paulo and Tiago are an integral part of the off-kilter, jazz-inflected hip-hop created by Tumi and the Volume.

Part of 340mlís ability to create music thatís "fresher than an early morning sea breeze" comes from their collective youth, spent in Maputo where a sure-footed belief in their ability to be something special threads through their early lives.

An organic musical influence on 340mlís members is unquestionably Latin and traditional Mozambican styles.

Krakatoa doors open at 21h00 on July 21 and at 21h30 on July 22. Tickets R50 booked through 031 580 5555.
