PMB CONCERT IN THE PARK (article first published : 2005-07-13)

July 17 is a date not to be missed on the Pietermaritzburg social calendar as it heralds the inaugural Concert in the Park, featuring the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra together with a star studded line-up of individual artists.

Parklane Super Spar and Aquelle along with Pilsner Urquell and Greenacre/Honeydew Dairies have chosen to sponsor this event that will be a major fund raiser for the Thandanani Children’s Foundation.

It is some considerable time since the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra performed in Pietermaritzburg and indeed the first time that they will perform a concert of this magnitude in the Botanic Gardens. The programme has been carefully compiled to appeal to everyone, with popular classics that include, Der Fledermaus Overture, Blue Danube, the Toreador song from Carmen, Finiculi Funicula, as well as a great line up of contemporary music and songs including World In Union, In The Mood, Wind Beneath My Wings, How Do I Live Without You and many more. The solo performers include Christopher Duigan and, Karen Van Pletsen.

Take picnic baskets, rugs or chairs into the event area. Picnic baskets are also available from Parklane Super Spar at R210 (basket for four) or R105 (basket for two). Businesses wishing to entertain their staff or clients can book blocks for 20 people or more. These blocks will be demarcated and set out on a first come first claimed basis.

Tickets R50 (R25 children under 16) with full proceeds going to the Thandanani Children’s Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation and Section 21 Company located at 46 Longmarket Street Pietermaritzburg. The organisation provides care and support to orphans and other vulnerable children in the greater Pietermaritzburg and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands region.

The concert will run from 14h00 to 17h00 and the Botanic Gardens are situated at Mayor's Walk in Pietermaritzburg. Booking is advised through Annie on 033 342 3487 at Parklane Super Spar, cnr Commercial and Greyling Streets.
