MUSIC REVIVAL CONCERTS (article first published : 2005-07-13)

Music Revival presents a week-long feast of concerts in Pietermaritzburg celebrating winter’s chilly evenings in a variety of venues. The audience is reminded to dress warmly!

July 13: The Wouter Quartet will perform in the Briar Ghyll Drawing Room at 19h30. The Quartet, which won acclaim with their performances over the Easter weekend, turn to a programme of Italian opera composers: Giacomo Puccini, Gaetano Donizetti and Giacchino Rossini. Better known for their popular arias and operas, each composer penned a single or a small number of string quartets. The performance by this all-female group from the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra takes place in the intimate drawing room at Briar Ghyll. Tickets R50 include coffee. The concert is supported by the Hendersons. Entrance to Briar Ghyll from Howick Road/Cordwalles intersection.

July 14: Art of French Song at Artist’s Palate at the Tatham Art Gallery at 19h00. Sponsored by the Alliance Française of Pietermaritzburg, this concert celebrates Bastille Day with an exploration of the art of French Song. Federico Freschi (baritone) sings popular French melodies by Fauré, Debussy and Ravel, opera arias from Gounod’s Faust and Bizet’s Carmen plus popular French songs La Vie en Rose, La Plaisir d’amour and Autumn Leaves. Christopher Duigan is the pianist. Tickets R70 include a café dinner of soup and dessert. There is secure parking and a cash bar.

July 15: The Six Cellos at St Georges Garrison Church at 19h30. The Six Cellos of the KZNPO give their inaugural performance playing a selection of classical melodies, original works for one to six cellos and a few ’pops’. The unique and awe-inspiring gathering of six cellos is guaranteed to delight. Tickets R50 (children R10) and the concert is supported by Mrs Nellie Hugo. St Georges Garrison Church is in Devonshire Road and there is secure parking.

July 16: Kerimov Trio at Fern Hill at 12h00. Sponsored by Fern Hill Hotel at Midmar, this winter concert and sumptuous lunch experience sets the tone for a perfect Winter Midlands Experience. From Siberia, the Kerimov Trio brings their Russian selection of classical and traditional melodies including items from the successful Moscow Nights. Booking essential on 033 330 5071. Tickets R95 include carvery (R40 concert only).

July 17: The Concert in the Park at Botanic Gardens featuring the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra on the lawns at the Botanic Gardens. (See separate article)
