THE ENCHANTED MOUNTAIN (article first published : 2005-06-11)

The Enchanted Mountain is this year's entry by the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg onto the Student component of the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. Directed by William le Cordeur, it explores aspects of the Shembe Church and its foundations. An archivist from Johannesburg is asked to record the testimonies of people who knew the prophet Isaiah Shembe, the founding prophet of ibandla lamaNazaetha (The Shembe Church). The Enchanted Mountain takes a musical look at this scribe's life as he begins the process of writing.

The musical is devised by a cast of UKZN Pietermaritzburg Drama and Performance Studies students who will be taking the play to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The seven-member cast fill the theatrical landscape with music, song and dialogue as they explore the enchanting process of storytelling.

The Enchanted Mountain will have two performances in the Hexagon Studio Theatre at the Hexagon Complex before leaving for Grahamstown. These will take place on June 17 and 18 at 18h00. Tickets R20 (R10 students) available at the door. The show runs for approximately an hour.

Despite its title, the production is not appropriate for children younger than 13.
