BURLESQUE SUPER GROUP (article first published : 2005-06-9)

The Burlesque Super Group is a popular local band with a strong following which recently enjoyed guest artist slot at Splashy Fen.

The Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens will host this dynamic group at the Nedbank Music at the Lake Concert in the Botanic Gardens on June 12 at 14h30. According to singer-songwriter and leader, Richard Walne, the Burlesque Supergroup “digs into good-time swing done in a big-band style, cruises through hard blues and gentle soul, rock and roll and barrelhouse”.

With superb musicianship from Durban and Pietermaritzburg's hottest jazz musicians and singers, the Burlesque Supergroup offers a great show - both visual and lyrical – with a great line handpicked from their extensive repertoire. The concert is bound to have major appeal to young rockers and followers of hot jazz. There's going to be a great vibe at this concert - so don't miss it!

Their debut album, Sitting Ducks, is about to be launched and the group will be playing a selection from the album at this concert. All their songs are originals and very relevant to the local market so keep an ear out for some favourite local characters.

Performing on Sunday will be Jochen Zeller on guitar and Grant Emmerich on drums. Murray McKinlay and Andy Arbuckle play trombone, pianist John Edwards has a jazz background and philosopher Roly Struckmeyer plays bass. Vocals will be supplied by Karen van Pletsen, Donnagh Roberts and Carol Trench.

The Burlesque Supergroup concert starts at 14h30 on June 12 in the Durban Botanic Gardens. There is secure parking with car guards in attendance off lower St Thomas Road in the Juventus Ground or in the Munies Sports Field off Sydenham Road.

Tickets R35 (R30 Senior Citizens and R25 for Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens and students) with children under 12 years free. Tickets are available from the Botanic Gardens Info Centre at the Visitors Complex or at the entrance gate on the day of the concert from 12h00. Booking is also available at Computicket. For more information, call the Info Centre on 031-309-1170 or 031 202-5819.
