IPI NTOMBI (article first published : 2005-05-20)

The Department of Drama Studies at the Durban Institute of Technology is to present Bertha Egnos and Gail Lakierís acclaimed musical, Ipi Ntombi, revived and directed by well-known Durban director and DIT Drama Studies lecturer, Jerry Pooe. This smash hit musical opens at the DITís Courtyard Theatre on May 28.

First staged in 1974, Ipi Ntombi will be presented for the first time in KwaZulu-Natal. It tells a story of love, when a young man Ė Prince (played by Cebo Khumalo) is forced to relocate to Johannesburg because of the poverty in his village. His mother being Xhosa and his father coming from the Zulu tribe have rooted him in different cultures so his daily life is influenced by his upbringing.

A well-known and highly respected warrior from the royal family, he is guided by a friend Zikalala (played by Nkululeko Simamane) as city life presents him with a culture shock. The story is told through a vibrant and energetic, African traditional dance extravaganza and music.

Ipi Ntombi boasts more than 20 songs (Mama Thembu, Ipi Ntombi, The warrior and many more) as well as dance routines from jazz to phathaphatha to pansula. This colourful entertainment will extend its infectious energy to Durban audiences and make them want to join the large cast of 75 dancers and musicians on stage!

The show runs in the DITís Courtyard Theatre until June 4. Performances at 19h00 (Sunday matinees at 14h00). Booking is through Computicket. For more information and schools performances contact Pam between 08h00 and 13h00 (weekdays) on 031 204 2194.
