CHORAL EXTRAVAGANZA (article first published : 2005-05-19)

One of the biggest musical tributes mounted in Pietermaritzburg comes to the Hexagon Stage as a company of 40 local singers ranging from professional to amateur come together under the direction of Peter Mitchell to stage a choral extravaganza using the music of Cole Porter and George Gershwin.

Musical directors are Helen Vermaak and Justin Southey with Vermaak doubling as chorus mistress and Southey doubling as pianist and performer. Paul Datlen choreographs to some of the world's most delightful jazz and swing numbers including I got You Under My Skin, Strike Up the Band, Lets Do It, I Love Paris and many more.

Guest soloists include Sandra Styles (Nunsense, Oh What a Night!), Erin Fourie (Godspell, Songbirds), Tamlyn Bell (West Side Story, Nunsense), James Aitchison (Joseph, Oh What a Night!), Helen Vermaak (Nunsense, Just Brel) and Michael Bullick (Joseph, Just Brel).

Performances are at the Hexagon Theatre on the University of KwaZulu-Natal campus on May 26 and 27 as well as June 1, 2 and 3 at 19h30. Tickets R40 (R30 students and senior citizens) booked on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
