GRAEME CURRIE QUINTET (article first published : 2005-05-15)

One of the highlights of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Centre for Jazz and Popular Musicís calendar promises to be the concert presented by well-known Johannesburg bassist Graeme Currie on May 18 at 17h30 with Wendy Twyford (vocal & percussion) Laurence Sale (drums), Burton Naidoo (piano) and George Mari (trumpet).

Graeme has played bass with many international artists including The Mammas And The Pappas, The Glen Miller Big Band, Trini Lopez, Dallas Jazz Orchestra, Michael Brecker, Helmut Lotti and Music Of The Night 1&2 and Cats World Tour.

Since returning to South Africa in 1988, Graeme has performed in every area of the local music scene from theatre productions of Chicago, The Buddy Holly Story, Hair and Grease as well as pantomimes and cabaret; through to local bands. He has also appeared with the Johannesburg Pops, Gerry Bosman Big Band, Gloria Bosman, Judith Sepuma, Sibongile Khumalo, Claire Johnson, Jimmy Dludlu, Miriam Makeba and many more.

A highlight of Graeme's career was playing for the Nelson Mandela 85th Birthday. Currie has academic ambitions as well, and this concert is a 'public recital' that will count towards a Master of Music degree from UKZN.

Admission R20 (R5 students). The show will run from 17h15 to 19h00 and a cash bar is available. More information from Glynis on 031 260 3385.
