KWASUKA BENEFIT GALA (article first published : 2005-05-15)

Durban’s ever-supportive and proactive theatre community are to host two performances of a glitzy benefit gala concert on May 22 at 17h00 and May 23 at 19h00 at Kwasuka Theatre in Greyville. The aim is to launch an exciting Friends Club scheme and to raise funds to generate money for the quaint theatre.

Kwasuka Theatre has been the home of some of the most significant and memorable dramas over the past few years under the banner of Greg King’s busy KickstArt Company. The theatre company – together with funding from the NAC - has been financing the running costs of much-loved old theatre building. Neither KickstArt nor Kwasuka are beneficiaries of the NAC for the current funding cycle so alternative revenue to keep the theatre going needs to be sourced.

The veritable who’s who of the Durban theatre community – most of whom are winners of Durban Theatre Awards - will be putting on the glitzy benefit shows. The line-up includes performers who have graced Kwasuka over the years, including Carol Trench; Belinda Henwood; Garth Anderson; Darren King, Evan Roberts with presenters Caroline Smart and Peter Gardner. Direction is by Peter Court.

Individual performances will be alternated with excerpts of current and future Durban shows: Twist of Broadway (currently running at the Heritage Theatre); the Neon Anthems (coming soon to Catalina Theatre); Ipi Tombi (next up at the Courtyard at DIT), and Bryan Hiles and Oded Rouche in an excerpt from Mutlix (next up at Kwasuka).

Much loved Kwasuka productions will also be showcased: Ben Voss and John van der Ruit will do excerpts of their smash-hit Green Mamba; Olivia Borgen; Carol Trench and Clare Mortimer appear in a scene from Crimes of the Heart; Darren King presents a moment from Laughing Wild; the cast from the delicious cult Table Manners recall this whacky production.

For the Sunday performance (May 22), which starts at 17h00, the courtyard will be open for braais and picnics and the bar will be open from 15h00 to allow the audience to meet the performers.

For the Monday show (May 23), which starts at 19h00, the focus will be on exotic sundowner cocktails and snack platters which will be available from 17h00 which can be enjoyed to the music of Lounge Act and the Burlesque Supergroup.

Tickets R60 to the Kwasuka Benefit Gala can be booked at Computicket who have kindly waived their service fee as their donation towards the theatre.
