GYPSY VIOLIN (article first published : 2005-05-5)

The Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest opens its special Monday night programme with the popular Kerimov Trio revisiting their must successful production to date - The Gypsy Violin - on May 9 and 10.

Under the auspices of Chris Duigan’s Music Revival, Gypsy Violin features the virtuoso playing of Russian violinist Elena Kerimova. This all-embracing selection of gypsy music includes Monti's Czardas, The Whistling Gypsy, Hora staccato and the Russian favourite, Dark Eyes. Boris Kerimov (cello) tempers the energetic mood with soulful and Romantic cello pieces. Christopher Duigan is the pianist.

The Kerimov Trio has been described as “one of South Africa's most polished classical ensembles” and is regularly invited to perform on the premier classical concert stages in South Africa.

This is the first in a varied line up of exciting one-off projects which has been put together by Sue Clarence to fill most Monday evenings at the new Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest.

Sue aims to ensure that the Monday programme offers as wide a variety as possible to attract Highway residents who can come along regularly to enjoy a varied offering - from recitals to comedy, readings to music. The Monday programme takes over on the one night when the theatre is “dark” - Monday being the night-off for the performers in the show which is currently running in the theatre at the time. The Monday programme may on occasion spill over to Sundays or Tuesdays depending on the availability of the theatre between theatre seasons.

Tickets R140 include a two-course meal and show ticket. (Please note there is a special pudding la carte menu.) Performances are on Monday and Tuesday at 19h00 for supper with the show at 20h30. Bookings and more information on 031 765 4197.

Please note: The Monday evening meal and show packages may vary from time to time. Mostly two course meals will be served, but on occasion, a light snack option will replace the meal. It would be prudent to check with the theatre in each instance when booking.
