HOT BOX (article first published : 2005-04-21)

”After a couple of months driving a Performance Venue Survey project for the KZN Department of Economic Development, it's back to producing some live gigs in Durban - hopefully for your listening pleasure!” says Neil Comfort of Rainbow Restaurant and TransAfrica Express.

“The other major development of the last two months has been the initiation of a partnership between Bandwagon Afrika, Durban Black Drifters Entertainment and United Rhythms Recording Studio,” he adds. “The finer details are still being worked out but at the end of the process we hope to be able to offer a one stop solution for the live presentation of original South African music coupled with the capacity to record and promote local musicians.

To celebrate Freedom Day (April 27), TransAfrica Express at the BAT Centre will host Hot Box featuring 340ml and Big Idea plus dub and hip-hop DJ's filling in the gaps.

340ml originate from Mozambique but are now based in Johannesburg. “The four members of this dub group have certainly been burning up the miles around Southern Africa over the past five years” says Neil. “They've pretty much played every festival and club around, culminating in being amongst a select few groups invited to this years Cape Town International Jazz Festival in March.“ The group features Pedro on lead vocals and sampler, Tiago on guitar and backing vocals, Rui on bass guitar and backing vocals and Paolo on drums and backing vocals.

Opening the live side of the evening will be Durban's own hip-hop/fusion group on the up, Big Idea. Fronted by the charismatic Q (Quincy Fynn) on rhymes, the band is led by bassist Mr Musgrave (Duane Nichols), Gee on drums (Gareth Gale) and David Smith of keys and tings.

“DJ's MG Fresh and Lapse - truly Durban's finest - will be spinning break beats and back breakers whilst the contingent of dub DJ's will be lead by Roy & Diago plus A-Xikondan, DJ Lip and King Babar (of Illshads fame),” concludes Neil.

Hot Box is presented by Big Idea in association with Bandwagon Afrika and TransAfrica Express. Technical support will be by Black Coffee Productions with Izan Greyling handling sound engineering.

Doors open at 20h00. Tickets R40 presale from Idols outlets and TransAfrica Express (R50 at the door). More information from TransAfrica on 031 332 0804 or Neil Comfort on 083 463 8044 or e-mail: bandwagon@artslink.co.za
