MANUEL ESCORCIO (article first published : 2005-03-20)

Operatic tenor, linguist, gospel singer, and art-collector and popular South African musical personality Manuel Escorcio is to perform in Durban on April 16.

His concert was due to take place on March 19 but Manuel has recently married and the concert was postponed to the April date citing “an extremely successful honeymoon in Miami” as an excuse!

A legend in his home country of South Africa, the principal resident tenor of the Cape Town City Opera for 12 years has sung in over 40 productions ranging from Mozart's The Magic Flute to Donizetti's The Barber of Seville.

Born in Mozambique of Portuguese-French descent, this colourful stage, television, and radio personality has recorded 30 CDs, six of which are gospel. Three recordings have gone Gold and one Platinum. He has won numerous awards including being named the Most Popular Singer in South Africa in 1986 and 1990. He sings in English, Portuguese, Dutch Afrikaans, Spanish, French, and Italian. He has a Master of Music degree from the University of Cape Town and served as a lecturer in vocal studies for the Faculty of Music at the University of Stellenbosch.

Manuel Escorcio will perform at Edgewood College, Pinetown, on April 16 at 19h00, in a benefit concert in aid of two Durban institutions: Tuinsig Centre for the Aged and the Malvern Children’s home.

Tickets R50 and R75 (discounted prices for pensioners, students and learners) available from Johanna Pieterse on 083 659 7222 or Danie van den Berg on 082 446 7256.
