PIANO TRIO RECITAL (article first published : 2005-03-16)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Music in association with the Distell Foundation for the Performing Arts presents a Piano Trio Recital featuring Liezl-Maret Jacobs (Piano), Geza Kaiser (Violin) and Cecilia De Cecco (Cello) on March 23 at 19h30 in Howard College Theatre, UKZN.

Liezl-Maret Jacobs, newly-appointed Piano lecturer at the UKZN School of Music, will lead the Piano Trio through a spectacular programme of Beethoven's Piano Trio Opus 1 No 3 in C Minor, Piano Trio Opus 49 in D Minor by Mendelssohn and Tarantulla for Violin and Piano by South African composer Thomas Rajna.

Commissioned by the SAMRO Endowment for the National Arts to serve as a prescribed violin work for the UNISA International String Competition in 2002, Tarantulla conveys a fierce, unrelenting character in keeping with the image of a fevered, compulsive dance that defies pain and mortal danger. Rajna's title is a made-up word grafted from 'tarantula/spider' and 'tarantella' the fast Italian dance in triple time, originally danced as a kind of remedy by those bitten by a tarantula in order to escape the effect of the poisonous bite. Rajna's riveting work provides a wonderful contrast to the celebrated works of Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

Liezl-Maret Jacobs graduated from the University of Stellenbosch and continued her post graduate studies at the University of Cape Town under the guidance of Albie van Schalkwyk and John Antoniades . Having completed her Doctoral Studies in 2003, specialising in Chamber Music, Jacobs has extensive experience performing as a Chamber musician in South Africa and has worked with a wide variety of instrumentalists and singers as an accompanist. Her interests include both the standard repertoire, especially Mozart and Beethoven, and that of South African composers.

After teaching for several years at the University of Stellenbosch, Jacobs has relocated to Durban after joining the staff of the UKZN School of Music in February this year. She will be joined by distinguished Durban musicians Geza Kaiser (Violin) and Cecilia de Cecco (Cello), both members of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Piano Trio Recital will take place at 19h30 in Howard College Theatre on the campus of UKZN. Tickets R50 (R30 concessions) booked through 031 260 3353 or marid1@ukzn.ac.za or at the door.
