FOOLS AWARDS 2005 (article first published : 2005-03-12)

The third annual Fools Awards, KwaZulu-Natal’s only public voting system for the arts, is underway.

April Fool's Day is a time for pranks, jokes and light-hearted fun. But historically in the world of arts and entertainment, ‘the fool’ (as in Shakespeare, commedia and many other ancient performance cultures) is someone who cloaks wise comment in the guise of entertainment or comedy, much as today’s satirists do.

Copy Dog, a Durban-based publicity company, uses the opportunity on April 1 every year to acknowledge the top achievers in the KwaZulu-Natal arts community.

Members of the public are invited to vote online at http://www.at.artslink.co.za/~copydog for their favourite movers and shakers on the arts scene, ensuring local artists receive the accolades they deserve.

Voting closes on March 20 and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held after a performance of Aaron McIlroy’s new comedy, The Stand-Up, at the Catalina Theatre on April 01.
