SARAH OATES RECITAL (article first published : 2005-02-13)

Friends of Music will present a recital by talented young violinist Sarah Oates with Elna van der Merwe on piano on February 15.

Sarah began her career at the age of 10 years old winning the UNISA Scholarship. This was the forerunner to many awards culminating in master classes with Yehudi Menuhin and Pinchas Zukerman. She was invited to join the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Programme at the Manhattan School of Music, New York, where she remained for two years. She has also studied in London, New York, and Amsterdam.

At various concerts, the overseas press has acclaimed Sarah Oatesís rich tone and expressive and excellent technique for such a young artist. Currently she has a principal position in The Hague Philharmonic in the Netherlands.

Her programme includes Beethovenís Sonata no.3 Opus 30; Arvo Partís Fratres for violin and piano; Blochís Baal Shem; Brahmsís Sonata no 2 Op100, and Kreislerís Caprice Viennois.

The Prelude Performer will be 12 year-old Benjamin van Aswegan, who won the Best Boy Soprano trophy at last yearís eThekweni Eisteddfod and a music scholarship to Kearsney College. He is a pupil of Barbara Trofimczyk. The Prelude Performer programme was made possible by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

The recital will take place at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road on February 15 at 19h45. There is safe parking and a cash bar is available. Book at Computicket.
