BUMS AND ROSES (article first published : 2005-01-30)

Veteran musical theatre performer Arnie Field will appear in his swansong performance in South Africa before moving to the UK. Arnie will be starring in the musical comedy Bums and Roses along with Hamish Kyd, Deanne Mackintosh and Leanne Van Zyl. The musical comedy revue has been penned and directed by Themi Venturas.

Bums and Roses began life as a late-night cabaret last year and was so successful that it has been developed into a fully-fledged musical comedy show. Initially, the show was a one-man show starring Arnie Field but now it has been expanded with another ‘bum’ played by funny man Hamish Kyd.

The show is made up of the comedic ramblings of two homeless and destitute men who have lost everything except their sense of humour and whose wry comic observations of life in SA combine sharp sit, pathos and gentle humour.

The show is backed up by some very fine music including Dangerous and Black or White by Michael Jackson, Ben by the Jackson Five, Fever by Elvis, When a Man loves a Woman by Percy Sledge, Chocolate Girl by the Whispers, What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, Lets Get Loud by Jlo and a humorous Platters Medley.

Also on the programme are I Write the Songs by Barry Manilow, Circle of Life by Elton John, Moulon Rouge by Lady Marmalade and a variety of other hilarious parodies.

Bums and Roses runs at the Catalina Theatre from February 2 to 20 with shows Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00). Tuesdays and Sundays there will be Buy One Get One Free Specials. There will be a special Valentines Day performance on February 13 which will include the show and a romantic cruise around Durban harbour.

Bookings through Thandeka on 031 305 6889. For block booking discounts and charity fundraisers call Glenda on 031 305 7612. Tickets R60 (pensioner and student discounts apply)
