SALLY SILVER VOCAL RECITAL (article first published : 2005-01-18)

Music Revival opens its 2005 season with a special concert of opera and song with international soprano Sally Silver.

Known in South Africa as Sally Stokoe and later Sally-June Gain she was schooled in Pietermaritzburg at Pelham Primary and Pietermaritzburg Girls High. She continued vocal studies at the Opera Academy in Durban with Sandra de Villiers and later with Emma Renzi in Johannesburg and made her professional debut with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra at the Playhouse, Durban in 1990.

She appeared in the joint KZNPO and London Symphony Orchestra concert at the Barbican in London last November.

After several important appearances in South Africa including Violetta in La Traviata at the Spier and Grahamstown Festivals and receiving a FNB Vita Award she relocated to London to pursue her singing career. Recent performances include recordings with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and performances with the English National Opera (ENO) and at the Spitalfields Festival.

Performances in 2005 include roles in L’Opera Seria (Nationalereisopera, Holland ) and Olympia, Antonia and Giulietta in Tales of Hoffman (Metz, France ). This will be her first performance in Pietermaritzburg.

Her programme includes popular arias by Mozart, Puccini, Gounod plus songs by Richard Strauss. She will be joined by Andrew Warburton at the piano.
