RAINBOW’S 23! (article first published : 2004-12-6)

On December 16, the Rainbow Restaurant & Jazz Club in Pinetown’s 23rd Birthday Celebrations feature Busi Mhlongo's Urban Zulu band and the Carlo Actis Dato Quartet (Italy).

After more than three years of trying to put together another show with Durban's own international star, Busi Mhlongo, circumstances have finally worked out right. Busi's Urban Zulu band was the first act that featured after Neil Comfort and his wife Nicola took over the reins at the Rainbow from founder Ben Pretorius (now of Ufudu Flyfishing Experience - www.ufudu.co.za ) on the September 2, 2001.

Busi Mhlongo is back with a tight nine piece outfit ready to rock the Rainbow into its 24th year. The line-up features Neil Gonsalves on keyboards, S'Busiso Mndaweni on bass, Kwazi Shange on drums, Spectre Ngwazi on acoustic guitar and Mphendu Mkhize on concertina. The rest of the group comprises Busi on lead vocals backed by three singer dancers.

As an added bonus, the afternoon's music will be kicked off by the Carlo Actis Dato Quartet, compliments of the government of Italy. Arguably the most original and amusing group of new Italian jazz, their music combines mediterranean and middle-eastern ethnic music, afro and funk rhythms, caribbean, oriental, east-european sounds and improvisation, all seasoned with a zany humour.

This is a crazy, explosive mixture of music and theatre that the audience easily relates to and feels a part of the show. The quartet, born in 1984, has participated in radio broadcast programmes for the national networks in ltaIy, Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium. They have a number of critically acclaimed recordings under their belt and tour extensively.

The above event is presented in association with Castle Milk Stout - the Jazz Brew.

The doors open at 12h00 with the first act on stage at 13h00. Tickets R50 presale (R40 at the door with Rainbow membership card). The Rainbow is situated at 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. More information on 031 702 9161 or 083 463 8044.
