THE SONG RYDERS (article first published : 2004-11-28)

A unique one-off acoustic musical explosion featuring eight of Durban's favourite sons in a series of five concerts will take place at Foxys, 210 Northway, Durban North. The true Durban Legends on one stage, collectively calling themselves The Song Ryders are: Brian Finch, Neill Solomon, Roger Lucey, Steve Fataar, Syd Kitchen, Madala Kunene, Kenny Henson & Dan Chiorboli.

Some say it's the steamy tropical climate, others talk about the unique lifestyle that sets this port city apart from the rest of the country. Whatever the reason, the city of Durban has, over many decades, produced an incredible number of South Africa's finest artists. Poets, painters, writers, actors, their names flood the cultural history of this proud city. But it is the city's musicians who seem to have outperformed the rest.

The 60s, 70s and early 80s were times when music literally overflowed onto the streets. Venues could be found in every corner of the town and suburbs, and everything from folk to rock and from jazz to jive could be heard. It was during these times that these eight legends found their voices and opened their hearts to scores of music lovers. Much has happened to them in the intervening years, and each one has their own unique story to tell - but the beauty is that they have remained deeply connected to the music that launched their careers.

Their paths have consistently crossed and their journeys have covered almost every inch of this vast land. Now collectively known as The Song Ryders, due to all the classic songs they have written between them, they return to the city where it all started, to once again do what they love most - play to the people. And for the first time since those heady days, they will share the same stage.

The performances at Foxys, 210 Northway, Durban North will take place from December 15 to 19 at 19h30. Bookings on 031 564 4357: Cover charge R80 pp
