DEFENDING THE PLANET RETURNS (article first published : 2004-11-26)

Back by popular demand, super-charged comedy duo Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert will appear in the return of their smash hit take on alien abductions. Defending the Planet is back this festive season for a run at Durban’s Catalina Theatre from November 23 until December 24.

You’ll experience a close encounter of the 3rd (or 4th or 5th) kind when Aaron and Lisa pool their formidable talents in their most hilarious musical comedy to date, written and directed by Sue Monteregge.

The story focuses on a self-help group of victims of alien abductions, formed to examine these and other close encounters of various kinds. Typical of McIlroy’s unique comedic style, Defending the Planet discusses the trauma of victims who have been “probed” by aliens. By means of “case scenarios”, off-the-wall characters and an eclectic range of foot-stomping music, suggestions are made as to how one can deal with an “invasion” and how to avoid falling victim to these outlandish creatures.

The show is a must for anyone who has ever wondered about extra-terrestrial activity and above all, enjoys an entertaining evening of music and laughter.

Aaron has previously delighted hordes of admirers in the musical comedy My Cousin Brother, playing opposite Kaseran Pillay at the Lango’s Supper Theatre, and at the Catalina in his second solo comedy show, Mr Personality. His award-winning “motivational speaking” show The Loser still plays around the country at private functions.

Prior to her current stage collaboration with McIlroy in Defending the Planet, Bobbert last performed with her husband in their musical comedy Belly Laughs, which dealt with the trials and tribulations of pregnancy and childbirth. Her widely acclaimed appearances in Brutal Tunes, directed by Caroline Smart last year for Sue Clarence Promotions, set a new bench-mark in comedy performance on our stages. She subsequently appeared in Laughing Wild, directed by Steven Stead.
