OSCA SHOWCASE (article first published : 2004-10-15)

Young soloists and the chorus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal Opera School and Choral Academy (OSCA) will perform in a Showcase Concert on October 22 and 24.

The concert will feature a varied programme of excerpts from past productions as well as new repertoire. Three choruses from Handel’s rarely heard oratorio Israel in Egypt will be performed. Other highlights in the first half of this concert will be the Sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti, a scene from Hansel and Gretel which was performed to critical and public acclaim at the Playhouse in Durban 2003, and excerpts from Die Entführung aus dem Serail by Mozart.

The second half will include highlights such as the Barcarolle from the Tales of Hoffmann by Offenbach, One Fine Day and the Humming Chorus from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and the Finale from Act 2 of Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss.

Singers include Bonginkosi Cingani, Lauren Dasappa, Mhlaba Buthelezi, Nozuko Teto, Lubabalo Nteyi, Nomveliso Nocuze and Zenneth Cibane amongst others. The concert will be conducted by David Smith and accompanied by Andrew Warburton.

The OSCA Showcase has two performances: October 22 at 19h30 and a matineé performance on October 24 at 15h00 in the OSCA Theatre, Jubilee Hall, Princess Alice Avenue.
