BAT SUNDAY SESSIONS (article first published : 2004-10-10)

As a perfect relaxing wind-down of the weekend, the BAT Centre hosts Sunday Sessions on The Deck at 15h00.

The Sunday Session on The Deck on October 17 at 15h00 will feature the multi-national Durban-based Ingeli International Band under the leadership of Charles Ukurikiyimfura from Cankuzo, Burundi who performs on keyboard. From the DRC the group includes Packy on lead guitar, Fataki on bass guitar, Alain on second keyboard and Papy on alto saxophone. From Kenya on drums is Hassan and from Uganda is Mike Chelle on tenor saxophone. Baden Leandre from Burundi is on Soprano saxophone with the line-up being completed by South Africans Manu and A. Murphy on vocals. Big band with the traditional sounds of Central Africa as you hear Amayaya, Ikinimba and Kwasa Kwasa grooves.

On October 24, the Sunday Session hosts the world music of Greg Georgiades and Ashish Joshi as Strings and Skins. They play rhythmical interpretations of North African and South African improvisational styles. Their “Afro-Asian Hybrid” beats are played on traditional instruments, with Ashish Joshi on Tabla (Indian percussion) and Greg on the North African Fretless Lute, the oud, bouzouki and nylon string Flamenco guitar.

The Burlesque Supergroup will appear in the last Sunday Session of the month, on October 31. This group made a highly successful appearance in August at the BAT Centre. Richard Walne is the driving force or this nine-piece group that is rich in musical talent with a big band sound.

More information from the BAT Centre on 031 332 0804 or Neil Comfort on 083 463 8044.
