MAMMA MIA! (article first published : 2004-10-10)

Mamma Mia!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, will premiere in Johannesburg on February 15, 2005, for the start of their major national tour which reaches Durban for a short season at The Durban International Convention Centre from March 25 to April 3.

The English language International Tour began at The Point in Dublin, Ireland in September and will move to The Edinburgh Playhouse in Scotland from November 12 before coming to South Africa.

Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolds on a tiny Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

With more productions playing simultaneously around the world than any other musical, Mamma Mia! is the world’s number one show with 11 productions currently travelling the world. The original London production opened in 1999. Since then it has grossed over $1 Billion and has been seen by over 18 million people worldwide.

With music and lyrics by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson and directed by Phyllida Lloyd with choreography by Anthony Van Laast. Production design is by Mark Thompson, lighting by Howard Harrison and sound by Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken. Musical supervision, additional material and arrangements are by Martin Koch.

A legacy of extraordinary songs and worldwide record sales of over 350 million have ensured ABBA a lasting popularity. The group achieved incredible chart success with 13 number one hits. The Mamma Mia! Original Cast Recording has gone Platinum in the US and Australia, Double Platinum in Canada, Double Gold in the UK and Gold in Germany, Sweden, Korea and New Zealand.

The run in Durban will be presented by BIG Concerts in association with SABC2 and East Coast Radio supporting UNITE AGAINST HUNGER. Tickets available at Computicket on 083 915 8000 or visit www.computicket.com
