MOSALA AND UETZ (article first published : 2004-10-10)

Pro Helvetia will present the combined talents of South African percussionist, Kholeho Mosala, and Swiss poet, Christian Uetz, in performance at the 8th Poetry Africa Festival in Durban.

Christian Uetz was born in 1963 in Egnach on the outskirts of Zurich in Switzerland. He studied Philosophy, Comparative and Ancient Greek at the University of Zurich and until 1997 he was also teaching Literature and Philosophy at high-schools. Since 1994 Uetz has been invited to about 400 readings and festivals of poetry, among other places to New York, Medellin, Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Ljubljana, Palermo, Berlin, Köln and Wien. He has also done readings and recordings with the jazz-trio Koch-Schütz-Studer. Uetz’s performances have been received with much enthusiasm.

Kholeho Tsukutlane Mosala was born in Cape Town. A musician, storyteller, composer, writer, actor and teacher, he recently launched his debut CD Marimba Mosala and two further CDs are in the making. He has worked extensively locally and overseas, most notably working for three years with Mzwakhe Mbuli and sharing the stage with local acts such as Qkumba Zoo, The Zap Dragons and Simba Morri. He has also worked on productions with Jazzart Dance Theatre Company, Pace Dance, Artscape and the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. He has done soundtracks for a few documentaries and short movies, such as Elephant Kingdom. He has toured internationally with his band, Asazi.
