CHRISTOPH GENZ MASTERCLASS (article first published : 2004-10-1)

Internationally acclaimed tenor, Christoph Genz will present a masterclass on October 6 and 7 where he will be working on opera aria and lieder interpretation with students from the Opera School and Choral Academy at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard College.

Currently a member of the Hamburg State Opera, Christoph Genz was born in Erfurt, Germany. He received his first musical training as a member of St Thomas's Choir in Leipzig. He then studied musicology at King's College Cambridge where he was also a member of King's College Choir. He took voice training with Hans-Joachim Beyer at the Leipzig Music College and with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

Genz has been invited to take part in concerts, Lieder recitals and opera performances in Europe, Africa and the USA under conductors such as Ludwig Guttler, Frans Bruggen, Ton Koopman, Sir Simon Rattle, Philippe Herreweghe, Thomas Hengelbrock, Michail Jourwski, Sigiswald Kuijken, Peter Schreier, Helmuth Rilling, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Guiseppe Sinopoli. He has also established himself successfully as a singer of Lieder and has given Lieder recitals at venues such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Wigmore Hall London and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. He regularly appears at famous music festivals such as the Schubertiade in Feldkirch, in Verbier, Davos and the Lucerne Music Festival. In April 2000 he appeared for the first time at Teatro alla Scala di Milano under the baton of Guiseppe Sinopoli.

He has already recorded a number of CDs including J.S. Bach's St. John Passion and cantatas under the direction of Ludwig Guttler for Berlin Classics, Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise, works by J S Bach with Musica Antiqua under Reinhard Goebel, cantatas by J S Bach under Sir John Eliot Gardiner for Deutsche Grammophon-Archiv-Produktion. A solo recording for Berlin Classics includes Lieder and canzonettas by Mozart and Haydn.

The masterclasses take place at 14h00 on October 6 and 7 in the OSCA Theatre, Jubilee Centre, Princess Alice Avenue (at the new footbridge). Secure parking is available behind the school.
