DEATH OF OLIVE PEEL (article first published : 2004-09-29)

Olive Peel passed away on August 8, 2004, aged 77 years. Although she had been living away from Durban for ten years before her death, she made a considerable contribution to the cityís music scene.

She sang in St Paulís Choir, the Durban Municipal Choir, the University Madrigal Group, the University Choral Society, the NAPAC Opera Chorus, Temple David Choir and the Natal Philharmonic Choir.

In 1968, she formed the Durban Opera Group to perform light operettas and ran the organisation successfully for eight years presenting Gilbert and Sullivan musicals as well as Lilac Time, The Student Prince and Bitter Sweet. She then formed The Olive Peel Singers to sing for charity for - and at - all the old age homes in and around Durban. On average, the group performed about 50 concerts per annum.

A dedicated amateur photographer, she won numerous awards and prizes and was an honorary fellow of the Durban International Photographic Society.

She became an avid shell collector with the discovery of a new shell, which is now named after her. She corresponded all over the world with other collectors and swopped, exchanged and bought shells.

Ten years ago, she went to live in Belfast, Mpumalanga, where she got to know the people and wrote the history of the town. The Department of Arts and Culture has accepted her work for their Archival Records Section and it will eventually be available to the public.
