JAZZ AT RIVETS (article first published : 2004-09-26)

The programme for the next month at Rivets Jazz Club at Durban Hilton International is a varied and entertaining one:

September 30: Pamela De Menzes Quartet - The beautiful and very talented Pam de Menzes, currently teaching voice at UKZN, offers a sparkling new repertoire performed with heart and soul. Her handling of jazz melodies is truly artistic and she puts on a really good show. Not to be missed!

October 7: Fate 4 Afrika - From Pietermaritzburg, this group is led by bass player Tim Zondi and has had many incarnations and changes of musical personnel. Determined and ambitious, the group is working hard to produce an album of original afro-jazz numbers, which will form the mainstay of their performance repertoire.

October 14: Consonance - Led by guitarist Nhlhla Mnikathi, Consonance also features the talents of Atlas Duma on drums and Vincent Mthethwe on keys. This talented afro-jazz ensemble plays mostly contemporary South African instrumentals, with the emphasis on lead guitar.

October 21: Burt Naidoo Quartet - Pianist Burton Naidoo, who this year has visited Sweden and France, is gaining a reputation for musical dedication and versatility. Although capable of handling a number of jazz styles, his preference is for Funk and Latin. Expect colourful and innovative lead breaks during an evening of finely felt youthful jazz.

October 28: Duke’s Combo - This well-known local five piece jazz band, led by Neville Naidoo was established years ago as a dance band. The name endures and the repertoire has stayed more or less the same, focusing on popular jazz ballads and dance tunes from the earlier jazz eras.
