KZN STARS SPARKLE (article first published : 2004-09-13)

PG Bison has been the sponsor of the KwaZulu-Natal-based Buccaneers field band since its inception in 1997. Sithembile Gumede and Sibusiso Sibisi are two PG Bison Buccaneers success stories.

Sithembile Gumede joined the band as a young boy in 1997 when they were looking for gumboot dancers. FBF Regional Director Bryan Clarke says, I recognised his rhythmic talent and involved him in the drum-line of our band.

Now the leader of the drum-line, Sithembile also plays for the KZN Youth Wind Band and other bands in Durban. In addition he teaches drumming at the Brian Thusi music school in Umlazi. In 2000 he was spotlighted at the International AIDS Convention in Durban as the solo drummer in a group of over 600 drummers. Sithembile has also represented the FBF (and PG Bison) in the USA twice and once in Norway.

Sibusiso Sibisi also joined the Buccaneers as a founder-member in 1997. At the end of this year, he will graduate with a BMus Degree from the University of KZN. In addition to his academic programme, Sibusiso also teaches for the FBF and performs in numerous music groups around Durban. He specialises in the trombone but began his music career in the PG Bison Buccaneers Field Band as a tuba player.
