SAMRO'S OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS (article first published : 2004-09-12)

Renowned South African producer, songwriter and musician, Don Laka, played a pivotal role in ensuring a high level of creativity at the recent event announcing winners of the annual SAMRO Overseas Scholarships, contributing three original compositions to this prestigious occasion, all of them having been specially commissioned by the SAMRO Endowment for the National Arts.

Held at the Great Hall at the University of the Witwatersrand, the event saw Marlene Verwey (flute) and Ayanda Sikade (drums) announced as overall winners of the 2004 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships, an annual competition held by the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO).

Verwey, who has just completed her Master's degree in the USA at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, took top honours in the category Serious/Classical Music, while Sikande triumphed in the Jazz/Popular Music category.

This year the awards were for Instrumentalists in the two categories (Serious/Classical Music and Jazz/Popular Music), and the selection of Verwey and Sikade by the adjudicators is a real boost for the advancement of the arts in South Africa. Indeed, the annual SAMRO Overseas Scholarships, which fall under the auspices of the SAMRO Endowment for the National Arts (SENA), have, over the years, played a vital role in ensuring that homegrown musicians reach the academic heights that they are capable of.
