STEEL DRUM FESTIVAL (article first published : 2004-08-26)

With support from Sasol, the annual Steel Drum Festival was launched in 1994. The first two events were held at the Village Green before it moved to Durban High School where it remained for a further two years.

Reaching hundreds of school children from in and around Durban, the festival is now firmly established at the Durban Botanic Gardens with Nedbank as its valued sponsor.

The 2004 Steel Drum Festival was held on August 21 and the St Nicholas School swept the boards, gaining no less than four trophies. The Grade 6ís won the Nedbank Trophy for 1st place in the primary school competition and the Grade 7ís were awarded the Botanic Gardens Trophy for third place. St Nicholas also won the Nedbank Trophy for first place in the high school section. The school also scooped the Steel Drum Foundation Trophy for the Most Outstanding Single Performance by a Band with their rendition of La Vida Lorca.

Troubadour trophies for second place went to Northdene in the Primary Schools section and to Sacred Heart in the High Schools section.

The Steel Drum Foundation Trophy for the most Improved Junior School Band went to Collingwood Grade 5 and the artSMart Rising Star Trophy was awarded to Zandile Tshaphe of HP Ngwenya Grade 7.

Various bands performed from the Brown School and their quality of performance so impressed the judges that the school was awarded the KZN Philharmonic Orchestraís Spirit Trophy.
