RIVETS JAZZ CLUB (article first published : 2004-08-1)

Rivets Jazz Club at the Durban Hilton International hosts live jazz music every Thursday.

August 5: SUE BARRY & AFRO-BLUE. Sue Barry has long been a name associated with some of Durbanís top female vocalists such as Busi Mhlongo, Xolisa Dlamini and Nina Mkhise. A jazz educator at Durban Institute of Technology, she is a fine pianist in her own right. Her jazz repertoire includes a wide range of works that she finds either interesting or challenging including some of her own.

August 12: ESPERANTO. This young University of KwaZulu-Natal based band is determined to make new rules and avoid anything obvious. Choosing songs that are both difficult and unusual or creating a fresh approach to familiar standards, Esperanto boasts the talents of Burt Naidoo on piano, Steve Peralta on vocals and Bruce Baker on drums.

August 19: SIMAMELE! Fronted by the talented Andile Mseleku on vocals, Simamele comprises Ndu Makhathini on piano, Banda Banda on electric bass, Regie Gcwensa on keys and Paki Peloeole on drums. This young band has been chosen to play at the prestigious jazz festival in Nantes later this month where they will present their contemporary African jazz repertoire.

August 26: TARYN & FRIENDS. Completing her fourth year in piano at UND, Taryn Kasaval heads up a quartet which features Holisani on vocals, Duane Nichols on electric bass and Paki Paleoele on drums. Working with the American jazz standards as well as a few well-chosen African Jazz numbers, this talented young lady is set to make an impact on the local jazz scene where lady pianists are in short supply!
