SIPHO GUMEDE MEMORIAL SERVICE (article first published : 2004-07-30)

The family of top KZN guitarist Sipho Gumede would like to officially confirm that on July 26, he passed away from lung cancer. He leaves behind four children - Mantombi, Sifiso, Nozipho and Nontuthuzelo and his brother Qedi.

Sipho Gumede's Memorial Service will be held at the Student Union buildings at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal - Durban campus from 17h00 on July 30. After the memorial service those wishing to attend his wake can proceed to Mr. Gumede's residence in Ndwedwe.

The deceased's funeral service will take place at the Student Union Buildings at the University of KwaZulu-Natal at 10h00 on July 31 and then the cortege will proceed to his final resting place at Stellawood Cemetery.

Buses will leave for the memorial service from Durban's City Hall on Friday at 16h30 and on Saturday at 09h30 for the funeral service. The very same transport will also bring the artists back to the city after the services.

The Rainbow Restaurant & Jazz Club has arranged for a bus to leave at 09h30 from the Rainbow to go to the Service at the UKZN's Student's Union and then proceed to Stellawood Cemetery. Thereafter it will return to the Rainbow. The Rainbow will be closed during this time as well as on August 1 as a mark of respect.

There will be a rememberance of Sipho Gumede on August 8 at the Rainbow starting from 12h00. A PA system and full backline will be in place for musicians wishing to pay a musical tribute, for people to recite poems or just to say a few words.

Anyone wishing to participate in this is urged to contact Neil Comfort on email bandwagon@artslink.co.za or on 083 463 8044 so that he can ensure all technical requirements are in place. “Sipho Gumede was always at his best when the sound was good and we will want to remember him with only the best,” says Neil.
