MOSHITO 04 (article first published : 2004-07-10)

The Moshito '04 Music Conference, launched at a function at Johannesburg's Newtown Music Hall in May this year, will see the South African Music Industry taking an unprecedented move into building unity, creating significantly more value for all stakeholders and effecting real change on several pressing issues.

Moshito 04 will take place from July 21 to 23 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, and around 300 delegates are expected to attend.

Through panel discussions and plenary sessions, as well as the input of keynote speakers and other experts, Moshito '04 aims to focus on key issues facing the South African music industry. These include the development of new markets for South African music and related products; the formation and implementation of a coherent strategy to combat piracy; and the exploration of viable ways of addressing social issues facing musicians, especially with regard to substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and social welfare.

As part of its commitment to industry unity and inclusivity, Moshito's Board of Directors comprises seven representatives of the key membership-based organisations working in the South African music industry today. These are the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), South African Recording Rights Association Limited (SARRAL), Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA), South African Music Promoters Association (SAMPA), National Organisation for Reproduction Rights in Music in Southern Africa Limited (NORM), South African Roadies Association (SARA) and the Musicians Union of South Africa (MUSA).

In addition, the Board of Moshito has a firm government partnership in place through the involvement of the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) in the initiative.
