A TASTE OF THE BAHAMAS (article first published : 2004-06-23)

The Bahamas National Youth Orchestra will enchant South Africans to the sounds of classical Bahamian music during the month of June.

The Department of Arts and Culture and Foreign Affairs will host the Bahamas National Youth Orchestra from June 14 to 29 at venues throughout the country to coincide with Youth Month which commemorates the involvement of youth in South Africa's political struggle.

Promoter of the concerts in South Africa, Sundru Pillay of Metrolink PR, said: "The young people of the Bahamas National Youth Orchestra are all avid musicians, and participate on a volunteer basis. They see their contribution as a form of national service towards the growth and development of The Bahamas.

"We will bring together musicians from all over the country for workshops, rehearsals and concerts with the Bahamas National Youth Orchestra, promoting music among the youth."

The Bahamas National Youth Orchestra was founded in 1990 under the direction of Errol Duke Strachan, and comprises more than 40 members from high schools and communities across the Island of the New Providence in the Bahamas.

In 1992 the Orchestra was featured prominently in the Bahamas' Quincentennial Celebrations to mark the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World and had impressed the local population as well as international dignitaries with their excellent standard of performance.

Pillay said the Orchestra has an extensive and varied repertoire ranging from Bahamian favorites to international classics. They perform frequently at Government House and at official ceremonies, charity balls and special musical functions around the Island of New Providence.

The musical selection to be performed by the Bahamas National Youth Orchestra includes Bellamae; Goombay Medley; Bahama Lullaby, O' Liza Medley, Everybody Sing When The Boat Pull Out, O' Look What You Do, Roll On The Caribbean Sea, Bahama Mamma, Bullfrog Medley, Brown Skin Gal and My Time Now.
