MOZART & BEETHOVEN QUINTETS (article first published : 2004-06-7)

Catch the third installment of the new Durban Concert Series on June 8 at Howard College Theatre. This offers an encounter with the mature Mozart at his most luscious and glinting, the young Beethoven at his exuberant best as Music Revival presents two rare masterworks, Mozart's and Beethoven's Quintets for Piano and Winds in E-flat major.

Here's a chance for newcomers and seasoned concertgoers alike to revel in the adventurous mix of oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French-horn, blending with and competing against the piano at its most dazzling. This combination of varied timbres would inspire any composer to new heights.

Mozart completed his Quintet for Piano and Winds K452 in Vienna in April 1784 and it was performed with great success as a small-scale piano concerto. The composer himself considered it one of his finest works. Also in Vienna at this time was the young Ludwig van Beethoven. While Mozart's quintet was obviously an inspiration for the younger composer, Beethoven's Quintet Op 16 has its own extrovert appeal.

Performances of these works offer a wonderfully full-bodied sound experience. The four Principal Wind players of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra - David Lloyd (oboe), Ian Holloway (clarinet), Katie Pryce (French horn) and Vessela Minkova (bassoon) - are widely admired as the finest woodwind section in the country. They are joined by Christopher Duigan at the piano.

The concert will be held on June 8 at 19h30 at Howard College Theatre, UKZN. Tickets R60 and include a glass of wine and nougat. Booking is strongly advised, e-mail chris@musicrevival.co.za or call 083 742 7497.
