HIP KULCHA (article first published : 2004-06-6)

The Playhouse complex is set to be a hive of activity on June 12 as youth and the general public converge on Durbanís home of live theatre to celebrate youth. The event co-incides with South Africaís ten years of democracy and focuses on issues that affect youth.

The dayís events kick off in the Porte Cochere area with crazy clowns and jesting jugglers ready to transform audiencesí faces from dull to psychedelic with their palette of face paints. This is followed by an interactive and highly entertaining storytelling session incorporating balloon animals and magic in the Grand Foyer with Durbanís Cherry the Clown, Adi Paxton.

During the afternoon a youth conference is scheduled from 15h00 to 18h00. The conference will be officially opened by the Honourable Mayor Cllr Obed Mlaba followed by poets and a childrenís choir. The discussion forum is divided into three main themes: youth and citizenship, youth and economic participation and youth and HIV/AIDS. The conference moderator will be Mr Nhlanhla Mtaka from the Institute for Democracy in South Africa.

The evening begins with a spectacular concert in the Opera Theatre. The concert will be compered by Ukhozi FMís dynamic Linda Sibiya. She will be accompanied by one of South Africaís finest female soap opera stars and stand-up comedians, Krijay Govender, who will have audiences rolling in the aisles with her unique brand of witty humour.

The superlative line-up of artists includes the critically acclaimed, multi award-winning hiphop sensation, Skwatta Kamp. Skwatta Kamp has been extremely popular with audiences from across the cultural spectrum after producing hits from popular latest offering Mkhuku Funkshun. They will share centre stage with the Afro-Kwaito sensation Malaika.

After the concert, the Playhouse Coffee Shop area will be transformed into a dance floor complete with disc-spinning deejay.

Book at Computicket or call Playhouse Box office on 031 369 9555. More information from the arts department on 031 369 9460.
