GHETTO KIDZ PROJECT (article first published : 2004-06-1)

The Saturday initiative at BAT Centre, Ghetto Kidz Project, was put together by two young visionaries, Sandile 'San' Sibiya and Mike 'Papi' who were then a hip/hop outfit called Ghetto Prophecies Movement.

Started in 2000 before Papi left for the UK, this project aims to positively influence young people who have been neglected in society. Its members use HIP/HOP as a means to an end of improving the self-esteem of these young people so that they are impurged of the emotional and psychological scars of abuse and to see themselves as leaders rather than victims.

The only life-line sponsor this initiative has is the space provided by the Bat Centre for its Saturday activities. Nise Malange the director of the Bat Centre went even one step further by providing a sound system. The Ghetto Kidz Project runs every Saturday from 12h00 to 14h00 where youngsters are workshopped by DJ Coilione AKA Mbulelo on how to turn tables and breakdancing.

From 14h00 to 16h00 they do open mic sessions where they showcase what they have learnt and also have fun through rapping, breakdancing and dj-ing. Admittance to this workshop is free of charge and children from stable backgrounds are welcomed.
