ME AND MY GIRL (article first published : 2004-04-23)

Northcliff High School in Johannesburg visits Durban every year with a well-presented musical of extremely high standard. In well-established tradition, the talented pupils of Northcliff will take over the Playhouse Drama with their sixth production, the hilariously funny and delightfully tuneful musical comedy Me And My Girl.

The storyline deals with Bill Snibson, a Lambeth costermonger, who is revealed to be the new Earl of Hareford.

His newly-discovered aristocratic relations are horrified. Bringing him to Hareford Hall, they attempt to educate Bill into the ways of the gentry and to separate him from his cockney girlfriend Sally. The result? Chaos of the most comical kind!

With a host of hilarious characters, witty one-liners and several toe-tapping, uplifting songs (including the famous Lambeth Walk, The Sun Has Got His Hat On and Leaning On A Lamppost) Me And My Girl is a sublime and sunny treat for all fans of musical comedy.

The hugely popular 1985 London production starred Robert Lindsay (My Family) and Emma Thompson as the inseparable cockney couple.

Starring as Bill in Northcliff High’s production is Jonathan Roxmouth whose titillating exploits as the peddler Ali Hakim in Oklahoma! and the sneering and haughty “Lord high everything else” Pooh-Bah in The Mikado delighted audiences. Joining him in the role of Sally is golden-voiced newcomer Claire Pfister. Regular audiences will recognize many other faces among the host of quaint and fun characters.

Me and My Girl runs in the Playhouse Drama from June 29 to July 4 and booking is at Computicket. Performances Tuesday to Saturdays at 19h30 with matinee shows on Wednesday (special rates for senior citizens) and Saturday at 14h30. Sunday’s show is at 15h00.

Tickets R40 (R30 matinees). There is an opening special on June 29 with tickets at R10. Contact Nick Jourdan on 083 744 3754.
