GERSHWIN’S RHAPSODY IN BLUE (article first published : 2004-04-21)

The Durban Music School’s monthly concert will take place on April 26 at 19h30 at the school premises, 21 St Andrews Street, Albert Park, opposite the Diakonia Centre.

The concert will feature senior students from the school, which is sponsored by Cell C, in a music feast of works by Bach, Gershwin, Scott Joplin and others. The highlight of the programme is Gershwin’s Saxophone Quartet Rhapsody in Blue.

Performers are Robbie Pott (clarinet) of St Charles School, Pietermaritzburg; Maxine Matthews (tenor saxophone) of Damelin, Durban; Frances Currie (flute) of Maris Stella, Durban; Christopher Wigens (baritone saxophone); Thomis Sweet (soprano saxophone) of University of KwaZulu-Natal; Reanne Leigh (alto saxophone), and Nontukuso Mlangeni, a music teacher at various schools around Durban, who is also a flute student.

“This is the third of our monthly concerts and the audiences are growing each time which is very encouraging,” says Werner Dannewitz, director of the DMS. “Patrons get together afterwards for a social over a glass of wine which adds to the friendly relaxed atmosphere here. These concerts form part of our endeavour to help profile the school and encourage corporate companies and organizations to sponsor musical instruments and lessons for disadvantaged youth.”

The concert starts at 19h30. There is secure parking at the back of the school, and security guards are in attendance in the public parking area at the front of the building.

Tickets R20 (R10 pupils). Bookings can be done on 031 3041001. Booking is advised as there is limited seating.
