HOMETALK (article first published : 2004-04-14)

Hometalk, Themi Venturas’s exciting theatre project which pays homage to South Africa’s rich and diverse history of popular music returns to the Catalina Theatre.

This Proudly South African production was originally staged at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre to celebrate the venue’s 21st birthday.

Remember "Braai vleis, rugby sunny skies and Chevrolet…", Pata Pata; Ag Pleez Daddy, Paradise Road, Charlie, Substitute and Master Jack? Remember the sounds of Clout; Dolly Rathebe; Rabbitt; Juluka; Miriam Makeba; Ballyhoo; the African Jazz Pioneers; Four Jacks and a Jill; Ladysmith Black Mambazo; Lucky Dube and Jonathan Butler?

Hometalk is a vibrant journey back to the heady days of Sophiatown, to the 60’s where hippiedom took on a South African flavour, the rocking 70’s and 80’s where Springbok Radio (and Springbok hits) ruled the airwaves at a time when international isolation gave South African’s free reign to create their own distinct sound and heroes. The show moves up to the significant 90’s where music was an integral part of celebrating South Africa’s freedom from the bonds of apartheid. No cultural grouping or music style is left untouched - ensuring that all South Africans will groove together.

The show is directed by Themi Venturas who has also directed such award winning productions as The Princess Magogo ka Dinuzulu, Taxi Jam, The Guitar that Rocked the World; Jimbo; Good Vibrations, Shoo Bop Shoo Bop, Cantina Tequilla and Curtain Up.

Hometalk runs at the Catalina Theatre: Wilsons Wharf, from April 20 to May 2 with performances Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 and Sundays at 18h00. Tickets R60 (R50 concessions) with preview tickets R25 throughout for the first three performances. There is an early bird special whereby audiences pay only R50 (no concessions) if they book early.

Booking at Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889.
