HISTORIC PIETERMARITZBURG (article first published : 2004-04-5)

From April 9 to 12, Music Revival will present a series of concerts over the Easter weekend. Pietermaritzburg’s magnificent architectural heritage provides the backdrop for an atmospheric experience of classical music performances. The concerts offer audiences an opportunity to explore both the buildings and a rich heritage of the finest classical music.

April 10 at 10h30: Baroque Recital in St George's Garrison Church - Tickets R50. Visit the historic St George’s Garrison Church at Napierville for an atmospheric and profoundly beautiful experience. This well-preserved building maintains something of a 100 year-old history in its very essence. The programme comprises music of the Baroque period (1600 –1750) for violin, cello and organ or harpsichord composed by JS Bach, GF Handel, Giuseppe Tartini and Arcangelo Corelli whose famous La Follia Variations is included in the line-up. The performers are Elena Kerimova (violin) and Boris Kerimov (cello) with Christopher Duigan (organ/harpsichord). Directions: From West Street into Burger Street towards the Railway Station then straight through the traffic light, under the railway bridge into Devonshire Road. Secure Parking.

April 11 at 14h30: Mozart for Two Pianos in the Tatham Art Gallery - Tickets R30. This beautiful building has served several purposes in history and now houses an exceptional collection of artworks that is rated one of the finest in South Africa. Amid this inspiring blend of contemporary style and Victorian architecture, Pietermaritzburg pianists Christopher Duigan and Claire Wright play WA Mozart’s glittering Sonata for Two in D Major K.488. They complete their programme with music by JC Bach, son of the famous JS Bach, and other classical favourites. Secure Parking in the Tatham grounds. Enjoy lunch before or tea after the concert in the new Artists Palette Coffee Shop in the Gallery. A menu created by the legendary Penny Hatting offers delicious fare and booking for lunch is advisable. Phone 033 342-8327.

April 12 at 12h00: Mid-Day Concert at Merlot at Merlot Manor, Blackridge. Tickets R50. Perched high on the hill overlooking the city is the magnificent Merlot Manor. A Victorian home of rich and opulent grandeur, the opportunity now exists to explore the fine Victorian details and voluptuous gardens. The concert takes place indoors at 12h00 in the library.
