KWAZULU-NATAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA (article first published : 2004-03-23)

The KwaZulu-Natal Youth Orchestra is a full symphony orchestra with sixty-four members ranging in age from 12 to 18 drawn from 25 schools and including a few university students.

The orchestra has a wide-ranging concert repertoire that includes music from Lord of the Rings, Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave and other well-known classical themes, also music from various Broadway showstoppers, themes from New York New York and Elton John's Crocodile Rock.

The current series of concerts celebrates KwaZulu Natal Youth Orchestra's tenth anniversary. They have played to standing ovations in many parts of this province and have become known for the youthful vitality of their performances. KZNYO is conducted by Ted Brien who has a long experience of working in youth music.

The KZNYO’s programme includes a concert at Westville Boys High School on March 26 at 17h30. Other engagements include Highbury School on April 23 at 18h30; The Pavilion on Mothers' Day (May 9) at 12h00; Treverton College, Mooi River, on May 14 at 18h30 and St Anne's on June 4 at 19h00.
