INETTE SWART (article first published : 2004-03-23)

The Friends of Musicís next recital on March 23 will feature Inette Swart (19), a third year BMus student at the University of Pretoria. Her piano teacher is Prof Elia Fourie with whom she took up piano lessons at the age of eight. She also studied with Tessa Rhoodie.

Since winning the Sanlam National Music Competition for Primary School Pupils in 1995, Inette was twice a finalist and category winner (piano) in the ABSA National Youth Music Competition, and twice runner-up in the Hennie Joubert Piano Competition. At the age of 16 she passed the Grade 8 UNISA practical examination (piano) with distinction, and was runner-up in the UNISA South African Music Scholarship Competition. She has given numerous solo performances and appeared as soloist with various orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra (1998 and 1999), Cape Town Philharmonic (1999 and 2000) and the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (2001).

She has received master classes from Prof Andriez Jasinski, Frank Henaghan, John OíConor, Joseph Banowetz, Eric Larsen, Lionel Bowman, Albie van Schalkwyk and Laura Mikkola. At age 18 she passed the Cambridge matric (the Higher International General Certificate of Second Education) with distinctions in all subjects. She was awarded University of Pretoria achievement bursaries in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

In 2000, as a first year B Mus student at UP, she won the Lionel Bowman Beethoven Completion for students up to 25 years of age. She was also awarded a Pretorium Trust Music Bursary as well as the Hennie Joubert Merit Award for UNISA Theory of Music, Grade 7. She played the Grade 8 Flute examination (her teacher was John Hinch) and was awarded the Robert Clough Bursary.

In 2001 she took up harpsichord studies with Prof. Wim Viljoen. She was awarded a Pretorium Trust Music Bursary again that year (also in 2002). In July 2001 she attended the New Orleans Piano Institute Summer School and was runner-up in the Concerto Completion. She also obtained a Performers Licenciate (piano) from Trinity College (London). In 2002 she obtained the UNISA Performerís Licenciate (chamber music) and was awarded the SAMRO/UNISA/Brenda Rein Scholarship for Accompanists. She was also awarded a RIESA Music Scholarship.

Her programme for the Friends of Music concert will include J S Bach;s Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue BWV 903, Haydnís Sonata in E flat maj Hob XVI: 52, Chopinís Barcarolle opus 60, Prokofievís Toccata opus 11. The second half of the programme will feature Brahmsís Paganini Variations opus 35 Book II, Lisztís Isoldeís Liebestod. Chopinís Ballade no. 4 opus 52 and Prokofieffís Sonata in A opus 28.

The recital on March 23 will take place at the Durban Jewish Centre at 19h45. There is safe parking and a cash bar is available. Book at Computicket.
