SUNCOAST JAZZ (article first published : 2004-03-22)

Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World host jazz performances in the Suncoast Amphitheatre on Sunday afternoons from 15h00 to 18h00.

However, as Monday March 22 is a public holiday, the jazz session has been moved to this date. Performing will be the IVA Band with Nonhlanhla Wanda on vocals, Vuyi Hlubi (keyboards), Sandile Cele (bass), Dlani (soprano/alto saxophone) and Sihle Ndlovu (drums). The band plays afro-jazz, gospel and reggae and has played at local spots such as the Playhouse, BAT Centre and Greyville race course. They gained momentum in 1999 when they won the yearís Battle of the Bands competition.

Appearing on March 28 will be No Name Brothers with Joseph Majola on lead vocals, Leonard Majola (vocals), Cain Selepe (guitar and vocals), Boniface Bhengu (bass) and Boyi Dlamini (drums). No Name Brothers was formed in 1968. Their style of music is traditional township vocals, and jazz rooted in the crooning style of the 50ís. The group is self-reliant and original in what they write and they arrange their own material without relying on cover versions. Most of their material is the reflection of the ups and downs of South African society.
