DURBAN OPERA BABES (article first published : 2004-03-22)

Following the sellout success of recent Champagne Concerts at the Catalina Theatre, the Catalina Theatre in association with Stacey Almond & Nuts 4 Music will host four of Durbanís most talented young opera students from OSCA, the University of KwaZulu-Natalís Opera School, and The Singers Company.

Durban Opera Babes will take place on March 28 and will feature Durbanís top accompanist Andrew Warburton who is currently appearing in the smash hit Brutal Tunes at the Kwasuka Theatre.

In a programme of favourite light opera arias from The Barber of Seville, Magic Flute and Cosi Fan Tutte, La Boheme, Flotowís Martha, Gilbert and Sullivanís Trial by Jury and Pirates of Penzance and popular songs from Fiddler on the Roof, Russian gypsy songs, Placido Domingo hit songs Be My Love, Because, and Bocelli super hit favourites The Prayer and Time to Say Goodbye.

The singers include Russian-born soprano Olga Fadina, a former graduate of the Moscow Conservatoire, who is now doing her Masters Degree at UND Opera School. Soprano Lauren Dasappa and baritone Bonginkosi Cingani are both final year students at OSCA and all three recently starred in the Opera Schoolís Gala Concert. Singersí Company tenor Lungelo Luthuli has appeared in many concerts and productions. He played Peter in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe which successfully toured schools in Natal and will star in the Playhouse Companyís forthcoming Senzenje spectacular opening on March 26.
