AFRICAN RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL (article first published : 2004-03-19)

The Sixth African Renaissance Festival takes place at The Playhouse from March 22 to 26. Presented with a ‘Peace and Democracy’ theme, this offers an exciting mix of various South African artistic and cultural experiences highlighting performances by established as well as community artists.

The festival features maskandi, is’cathamiya, indlamu, Indian dance, praise poetry and choral music. Some of the highlights will feature the inimitable Mbongeni Ngema and Leleti Khumalo and the cast of Sarafina, who are about to embark on a national tour of this production.

Others will include Barry “Umkomazi” Leitch, East Coast Choristers, Kholwa Brothers and a choir of 10-year-olds from various schools in Durban Municipality.
