MUSIC AT THE VILLA (article first published : 2004-02-22)

Villa D’Este in Glenwood together with Nuts 4 Music is presenting four fabulous theme evenings on the first Wednesday of every month.

The first event on March 3 combines classical music with food specially prepared from the regions of Italy. Romance in Tuscany features Italian opera arias and music from Puccini to Bocelli with three of Durban’s top classical musicians - opera diva Stacey Almond, KZNPO Violinist Beatris Lauenburg and well-known German-born pianist Gerhard Geist.

The programme features favourite Italian opera arias from Tosca, Manon Lescaut, La Wally, Madam Butterfly and La Boheme plus Oh My Beloved Father and the duet from Lakme now more widely known from the British Airways advert, arranged for voice and violin.

Also included are hits made famous by Vanessa Mae N’essun Dorma and Bocelli’s Time to Say Goodbye and The Prayer as well as theme tunes from Titanic, The Godfather and the new Josh Groban hit Mi Mancherai.

Each of the four Music at the Villa evenings will have a special menu prepared from dishes of the regions of Italy to compliment the music. For Romance in Tuscany, Villa D’Este will serve a Panzanella Salad (moistened bread with fresh tomatoes, basil and onion); with Tuscany style Antipasto (black olives, crostini and pickled peppers) as a starter, followed by Anatra all’Arancia (roast duck) and Pesce con Patate (linefish with potatoes) as a main course, fresh fruit and Italian Espresso Coffee.

Via Venezia on April 7 will feature music for voice and classical guitar from Venice and the capital cities of Europe. Food will focus on the Venetian region accompanied by songs and arias from Baroque through to Superstar singer and composer Ennio Morricone.

Bella Italia on May 5 features The Dolce Vita String Quartet when top KZN Philharmonic Orchestra players delight with music from Vivaldi to Gershwin – together with some favourite recipes from Roma and Milano.

Tickets R125 for three-course meal plus the music programme. Seating is limited so early booking is essential. Phone Villa D’Este on 031 202 7920.
