DOS GUITARRES (article first published : 2004-01-28)

The next Classical Champagne concert will take place on Feburary 28 at the Catalina Theatre at 12h00. The programme will feature well-known guitarists Demi Fernandez on Flamenco and Leandros Stavro on Classical Guitar.

Demi Fernandez teaches Jazz Guitar and has been Head of the Jazz Dept at the Technikon Natal (now Durban Institute of Technology) since 1990 and will shortly be moving with his department to the KwaZulu-Natal University. He is very well-known and extremely popular in his own right as a Flamenco guitarist. He performs regularly with his wife, well known Spanish Dancer, Linda Vargos. Demi appeared recently in Samos Flamencos at The Catalina Theatre.

Demi has studied in Sevilla, Spain, and travelled the world playing and researching music for his instrument. He will perform Alegrias and Colombiana both by Paco de Lucia as well as his own composition called Guajira. He will also play two buleria (solo guitar playing basic Flamenco dance rythm): one by Miguel Perez and the other by Gerardo Nunez.

Leandros Stavro teaches Classical Guitar at the University of KwaZulu-Natal at the new Durban Music School and in schools throughout Natal. He has taken part in Master Classes in Spain with the greatest guitarist of all, Narciso Yepes, and is well known for his solo guitar playing in the Midlands, where he lives at Curry's Post. He will perform Capriccio Arabe by Francesco Tarrega; Sons de Carhillos (song of the bells) by Pernambuco; Asturias by Isaac Albeniz and Canarios by Gasper Sanzs as well as Cavatina (the theme from The Deer Hunter) by Stanley Meyers.

To finish off the concert both guitarists will play a Romance entitled Anonymous but originally attributed to the great guitarist Narciso Yepes, from the film Forbidden Games.

To book, contact the Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889.
